Europe is facing an alarming surge in sexually transmitted infections (STIs), with gonorrhea cases skyrocketing by nearly 50% within a year, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
Syphilis and chlamydia are also on the rise, with increases of 34% and 16% respectively.
Andrea Ammon, head of the ECDC, highlights the need for immediate action to curb this trend, emphasizing the importance of condom use and testing.
This resurgence of STIs follows a period of decline during the pandemic, further underlining the urgency of addressing the spread now.
Notably, untreated STIs can have severe consequences, including nervous system damage and serious risks to unborn children.
