The number of cases of severe blood poisoning, or sepsis, caused by invasive streptococcus bacteria, has seen a significant increase in Sweden during 2023. The infection can potentially lead to death and has affected individuals from different walks of life, including Anders Wilander, a former chairman of HV71. While healthcare systems have implemented a sepsis alarm to provide quick help to patients, further measures are being taken to improve care.
The surge in cases has been attributed to the ongoing pandemic, which has led to a decrease in exposure to bacterial agents, and thus a decline in immunity.
State epidemiologist Magnus Gisslén warns that anyone can be affected, reinforcing the importance of quick medical attention in managing this serious infection.
