Russian Public's Complex View on Ukraine Invasion

Published: 2024-02-24

Two years into Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, public sentiment within Russia reveals a complex picture.

Many in the Russian elite, although not openly supporting the invasion, have come to tolerate it, largely due to economic interests and fear of personal loss.

Prominent Russian journalist Michail Zygar, now based in the US, indicates that only a small fraction of Russians actively support the war, with most people either afraid or reluctant to voice their opposition.

Zygar, who has interviewed key figures within Putin's circle, suggests that many believe a change in the US presidency could alter the course of the war.

Despite the prevailing tolerance, the prospect of a continued or intensified conflict looms, with some believing Putin still has ambitions to capture Kiev.
