In a rare and unexpected discovery, a family found a dead dolphin along the shoreline just north of Drag in Kalmar County, Sweden, on Good Friday.
The family, who were out for a beachside stroll, reported their find to the police, who then advised them to send pictures to the Swedish Museum of Natural History for identification.
Experts at the museum confirmed the mammal to be a dolphin, a sight extremely unusual for the Baltic Sea region, particularly noted by the distinct shape of the dolphin's teeth.
The incident has sparked interest, as dolphins are more commonly observed on Sweden's West Coast, making this an exceptional occurrence in the East.
An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death and gather more information about the dolphin.
