An investigation by Swedish Radio's Ekot has revealed that Iran is suspected of planning assassinations of Swedish Jews.
In 2021, two clandestine agents linked to Iran's military intelligence service were reportedly tasked with targeting three individuals for murder in Sweden.
Among the potential victims was Aron Verstandig, chairman of the Jewish Central Council.
The pair, who had been granted asylum in Sweden under the guise of being Afghan nationals despite warnings about the male suspect's ties to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, were arrested in the Stockholm area on charges of conspiracy to commit terrorist crimes.
Although they were held on probable cause, legal proceedings were not initiated due to insufficient evidence, and the couple was expelled from Sweden in 2022, deemed a serious security threat.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of Swedish citizens and the thoroughness of asylum vetting processes.
