A groundbreaking HIV prevention treatment has been named the scientific breakthrough of the year by Science magazine.
The treatment involves a biannual injection of lenacapavir, which has shown remarkable success in preventing HIV infections.
In a study involving over 2,000 women in Uganda and South Africa, none of the participants who received the injection contracted HIV, compared to infection rates in groups using daily oral medications.
However, the high cost of the treatment—approximately $40,000 annually—poses a significant barrier, especially in regions like sub-Saharan Africa, where HIV remains prevalent.
While the innovation marks a milestone in HIV prevention, its accessibility remains a critical challenge.
