EU Nature Law Faces Setback Amid Farmer Protests

Published: 2024-03-25

The European Union's ambitious Nature Restoration Law aimed at ensuring sustainable biodiversity recovery across 20% of EU's land and water by 2030 is facing a serious setback.

A pivotal vote required to pass the legislation fell through after Hungary reversed its position, leaving the bill without the necessary majority.

This shift, influenced by widespread protests from farmers across Europe, echoes broader opposition from several EU countries including Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Finland, and Poland.

Despite this, Belgium, currently leading the Council of the EU, has vowed to continue negotiations.

If unresolved, the legislation could be postponed until after the next EU election and commission.
