Concerns Rise Over Chinese Battery Factory in Sweden

Published: 2024-05-12

A year after the announcement of a Chinese company, PTL, planning to build a factory in Timrå, Sweden, for battery raw material production, concerns over the project's environmental impact and security implications have surfaced.

Riksdag member Jörgen Berglund (M) highlights the risks associated with the Chinese ownership, considering China's law requiring companies and citizens to report to the state.

Critics, including former Timrå municipal council chair Ewa Lindstrand, question the promised minimal environmental impact, pointing out the inevitability of pollution.

Despite PTL's commitment to sustainable practices, the construction of a factory with ten 35-meter tall chimneys implies significant emissions, including sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide.
