Baltic Sea Cable Sabotage Unfolds

Published: 2025-01-31

A series of undersea cable disruptions in the Baltic Sea has raised suspicions of sabotage, prompting NATO to launch Operation Baltic Sentry.

Four vessels are under investigation for their potential involvement.

The Chinese-flagged Yi Peng 3, Cook Islands-flagged Eagle S, Maltese-flagged Vezhen, and Norwegian-flagged Silver Dania have all been linked to incidents damaging critical communication cables.

Norwegian authorities recently detained the Silver Dania, whose Russian crew is suspected of damaging a fiber-optic cable between Sweden and Latvia.

Meanwhile, the Vezhen remains under Swedish custody.

NATO officials, including operation leader Arjen Warnaar, have deemed the frequency of these incidents too significant to be coincidental.

Investigations continue as tensions rise in the region.
