Vegan Student Barred from Medical Studies

Published: 2024-05-02

In a controversial decision, Lund University has barred a 23-year-old medical student, Jasper Forfang Righards, from continuing his studies for refusing to dissect a lamb, citing his vegan beliefs.

Despite offering alternatives such as attending more human organ autopsies, the university maintains there are no feasible adjustments to its curriculum that can accommodate individual ethical stances.

This stance reflects a broader policy across various medical programs in Sweden, where prescribed educational components, including animal dissection, are mandatory regardless of personal convictions.

Righards plans to seek admission to another university that does not include animal dissection in its curriculum, while continuing to work and volunteer in sectors aligned with his ethical beliefs.
