Ukrainian refugees in Sweden, two years post the massive invasion, continue to face significant hardships, living on a meager daily allowance of 71 SEK, a sum unchanged since 1994, and struggling to afford basic necessities.
Despite the challenges, Ukrainians like Mariia Zakharenko and Anastasiia Dorofii find solace in the safety and opportunities for integration Sweden offers.
Zakharenko, a former engineering student, and Dorofii, a nurse, have managed to secure jobs and are learning Swedish, aiming to rebuild their lives.
However, the uneven access to language education and financial support based on residency complicates their journey towards full integration.
A forthcoming legislative proposal promises to improve the situation by allowing Ukrainian refugees to register in Sweden, hence accessing better financial aid and integration opportunities.
