Turkish Parliament to Decide on Sweden's NATO Bid This Week

Published: 2024-01-24

Sweden's long-awaited accession to NATO hinges on the approval of the Turkish parliament, which is expected to vote on the matter this week.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the exact timing of the vote, multiple media outlets report that the debate and vote could happen as early as Tuesday or Wednesday.

The ruling AKP party, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, along with its allied parties, hold a majority in the parliament and are set to present the motion.

If Turkey approves Sweden's NATO application, Hungary remains the only NATO member yet to ratify Sweden's bid.

The Turkish parliament's foreign affairs committee has already given the green light, and experts believe the approval process in Turkey could move quickly once the parliament votes affirmatively.

However, Turkey has previously linked Sweden's NATO entry with the purchase of F-16 fighter jets from the United States, a deal yet to be approved by the U.

S. Congress.

Hungary, meanwhile, is not expected to address the issue until its parliament reconvenes from winter recess in February or possibly later.
