Tui Flight to Thailand Diverted to Stockholm Due to Technical Issue

Published: 2024-02-03

A Tui flight bound for Phuket, Thailand from Landvetter Airport in Gothenburg, Sweden, was forced to turn back after a technical issue was discovered mid-flight.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, carrying approximately 330 passengers, had reached Azerbaijan when the crew detected the problem around 6 PM on Friday.

Instead of continuing to Thailand, the aircraft landed at Stockholm's Arlanda Airport at 10:45 PM.

Passengers experienced anxiety and concern after the announcement, with some even crying, but the captain managed to reassure them by explaining that the issue did not affect the plane's ability to fly.

Upon landing, the passengers were shuttled to a nearby hotel, where they faced long waits for transportation and check-in due to limited bus capacity and hotel services.

Tui has been criticized for inadequate communication, as passengers received minimal updates until the following morning.

Tui's Nordic Communications Manager, Adam Gyrki, acknowledged the unfortunate situation and the company's efforts to arrange alternative accommodations and a replacement flight.

A solution was found by Saturday morning, with a new departure scheduled for 1 PM using an aircraft borrowed from a Norwegian airline.

Tui did not disclose the specific technical issue but confirmed the original plane was undergoing service at Arlanda.

The incident also affected travelers waiting to return from Phuket, who were expecting to board the original aircraft for their journey back to Sweden.
