Swedish Youth's Diminishing Optimism: A Report

Published: 2024-02-01

Swedish youth are increasingly pessimistic about their future, with political engagement, hopes for the future, and faith in democracy all on the decline, according to the latest Youth Barometer report.

The annual survey, which interviewed 15,000 young individuals aged 15-24, reveals a stark shift in attitudes.

Pressing global issues such as economic downturns and concerns about unemployment are contributing to the gloomy outlook.

The unemployment rate for Swedish youth was 8.3% in December 2023, marking an increase from the previous year.

The pervasive negative news and the impact of social media are also affecting young people's mental health and self-perception, with some like 19-year-old Isak Palmaer choosing to abandon social media to improve their well-being.

The report also indicates a drop in young people identifying as anti-racist, feminist, or environmentally conscious, suggesting a societal shift in the value placed on these identities.

Despite these challenges, the Youth Barometer shows that while the perception of life as safe has decreased, relationships with friends and family remain significant, with many young people feeling closer to their parents compared to previous generations.
