Swedish Healthcare Minister's Aid Package Falls Short, Regions Face Deficit

Published: 2023-12-24

In an attempt to counter the increased costs due to inflation, Sweden's healthcare minister, Acko Ankarberg Johansson, has announced a nearly ten billion kronor aid package for the country's regions.

The funds, announced in the government's budget, aim to prevent cutbacks in healthcare services.

Despite this, regions are expected to face a deficit of 24 billion kronor next year without significant measures, according to a report from the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions.

Regions like Sörmland and Östergötland have already announced major layoffs to save costs.

Aida Hadzialic, finance regional councilor in Stockholm, expressed disappointment, saying the 2.1 billion kronor allocated to the Stockholm region is far from enough to cover healthcare costs.
