Swedish Defense Agreement with U.S. Defended Amid Criticism

Published: 2024-05-05

In a recent rebuttal, Jörgen Berglund, the group leader for the Moderate Party in the defense committee, criticized Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society's (Svenska freds) stance against the Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) with the United States.

He refuted claims that similar agreements with Norway and Denmark include nuclear weapon bans, clarifying that the DCA does not permit the U.

S. to bring nuclear weapons into Sweden nor establish permanent bases.

Berglund emphasized the importance of such defense agreements for Sweden's security, especially in the face of aggression, highlighting the enhanced readiness and support from the U.

S. and potentially NATO members.

He also addressed the legal framework for U.

S. military personnel in Sweden, including tax obligations and jurisdiction over crimes, underscoring the safeguards within the agreement.

Berglund concluded by challenging Svenska freds' history of opposing defense measures, suggesting that their fears have not materialized and questioning their alternatives to military agreements for Sweden's security.
