Swedes in Lebanon Amid Escalating Conflict

Published: 2024-09-24

Amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, thousands of people are fleeing southern Lebanon, with many heading towards Beirut.

The Swedish Foreign Ministry estimates that between 2,000 and 3,000 Swedes remain in Lebanon, despite travel advisories against visiting the country.

The Swedish embassy in Beirut has been closed since August, and diplomatic efforts are now managed from Cyprus.

Fayrouz Ramadan, a Swedish-Lebanese resident of Beirut, has chosen to stay, believing she can contribute more by providing trauma support to those affected by the conflict.

The situation in Lebanon is dire, with hundreds killed and thousands injured, including many women and children.

Despite the chaos, communities are coming together, opening schools and homes to those displaced by the violence.
