Swedes Debate Shorter Workweek After 50 Years

Published: 2024-05-16

In 1973, Sweden introduced the 40-hour workweek, yet despite ongoing discussions, no changes have been made in 50 years.

Recent polls show 54% of Swedes now support a six-hour workday, the highest since the 2000s.

Social Democrats and several unions are pushing for legislation, especially in public sectors.

However, there are differences in opinions across labor unions and employers.

The decision will be a key topic at the LO union's congress on May 17.
