Sweden's Stalled Gender Wage Gap Sparks Nationwide Action

Published: 2024-03-05

In Sweden, the fight for equal pay has hit a standstill, with women effectively working for free for 48 minutes each day, amounting to a monthly income disparity of approximately 4,000 SEK.

Despite years of progress, the wage gap between genders widened last year, debunking the theory of a temporary pandemic effect.

Activists from "Lön hela dagen" (Pay All Day), a coalition of unions and women's organizations, highlight the ongoing challenges in achieving economic equality, pointing out the adverse impacts of lower wages on women's pensions, savings, and even their ability to leave abusive relationships.

Nationwide protests and discussions are being organized to demand action against structural pay disparities and to advocate for a societal shift towards full employment, secure jobs, and equitable workplace environments for all.
