Sweden's Stagnant Working Hours

Published: 2024-06-16

Sweden, once a leader in reducing working hours, has seen stagnation in this area for the past four decades.

In the 1920s, Sweden led the way with a 48-hour workweek, gradually reducing it over the years.

However, since the late 1970s, the average working hours have remained largely the same.

The quest for more leisure time has taken a backseat as economic inequality has grown.

Although technological advancements could potentially allow for reduced working hours, today's reality still echoes Keynes' dream yet to be realized.
