Sweden's Security Risks Rise Amid Russian Threat

Published: 2024-02-19

The Swedish Military Intelligence and Security Service (Must) has issued a stark warning about the increasing security risks to Sweden due to Russia's military actions, emphasizing the error in underestimating the Russian threat despite its involvement in Ukraine.

Must Chief Lieutenant General Thomas Nilsson highlighted Russia's high-risk behavior and disregard for consequences, noting the country's efforts to replenish military strength post-Ukraine losses despite economic and sanction-related challenges.

While the report indicates no immediate increase in the military threat to Sweden, it stresses the heightened risk of military incidents due to the tense environment.

Additionally, the report points to the dangers of foreign intelligence activities targeting Sweden, with Russia, China, and Iran being of particular concern, especially in the light of misinformation campaigns during election periods.

Nilsson urges vigilance, stressing that the current situation does not foresee an improvement in the near future.
