Sweden's Roswall Takes Key EU Role

Published: 2024-09-17

Jessika Roswall, Sweden's nominee for the new European Commission, has been assigned the portfolio for environment, water, and a competitive circular economy.

This aligns with Sweden's priorities in the EU, focusing on environmental issues rather than climate, which has been allocated to the Netherlands.

Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, emphasized the importance of these areas for Europe's competitiveness and green transition.

Roswall expressed satisfaction with her role, highlighting its significance for the EU's shift from fossil fuels.

The Swedish government, including Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, welcomed the assignment, noting its importance for Sweden's growth and climate transition.

However, Roswall faces challenges, particularly regarding EU forest policies, which have been contentious in Sweden.

The new commission's formation reflects a commitment to gender equality, with 40% of the nominees being women.
