Sweden's Final Leap into NATO

Published: 2024-03-05

Sweden has taken the final step towards NATO membership as Hungary's president, Tamás Sulyok, signed off on Sweden's application.

This comes after a series of approvals, with Turkey and Hungary being the last NATO countries to ratify Sweden's application, marking a significant milestone after Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership following Russia's attack on Ukraine.

The ratification process was marked by diplomatic negotiations, including Turkey's initial refusal and subsequent demands for Sweden's membership.

With Hungary's ratification completed, the documents are now set to be sent to Washington, indicating that Sweden is likely to become a full NATO member within the coming week.

This move is seen as a strategic shift for Sweden, significantly influenced by the altered security landscape in Europe due to Russia's aggression.
