Sweden's Equality Ranking Plummets

Published: 2024-10-21

Sweden has experienced a significant drop in the global equality rankings, falling 14 places over the past four years in Oxfam's Commitment to Reducing Inequality Index (CRII).

This decline is attributed to changes in tax policies, such as reduced marginal tax rates and the abolition of inheritance and wealth taxes, which have widened economic disparities.

Oxfam's report, developed in collaboration with Development Finance International, evaluates 164 countries based on political decisions affecting economic equality.

This year, Sweden ranks 24th, the lowest among Nordic countries, while Norway, Canada, and Australia lead the index.

Oxfam highlights that the current tax policies favor the wealthiest, placing a heavier burden on those living in poverty.

This trend of increasing inequality in Sweden mirrors a global pattern.
