Sweden's Emissions Surge Amid Policy Criticism

Published: 2024-10-24

Sweden has experienced a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions, rising by 5.6% in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. This marks a reversal of the previous trend of declining emissions.

The transport sector, construction industry, and household consumption are the primary contributors to this rise, largely due to increased use of fossil diesel.

The reduction in the biodiesel blending mandate from January 2024 is a key factor in this shift.

Critics, including environmental experts and political figures, argue that current climate policies are insufficient to curb emissions.

They call for stronger measures and societal changes to address the issue.

The Swedish government, however, attributes part of the emissions increase to economic growth, while acknowledging the impact of policy changes on diesel use.
