Sweden's 'Elephant Graveyard' Under Fire

Published: 2024-10-05

In Sweden, the controversial practice of placing dismissed government officials in the so-called "elephant graveyard" has come under scrutiny.

This term refers to a section of the government where ousted officials continue to receive their salaries despite being removed from their positions.

Recently, Anna Kinberg Batra, a former county governor, was dismissed but retains her salary until 2029, potentially earning over 6.5 million kronor.

This has sparked debate, with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson advocating for a change in the rules.

He argues that the current system undermines public trust and respect, as it allows officials to remain on the payroll without fulfilling their roles.

Kristersson has initiated a process to reform these regulations, aiming for changes before the end of his term.
