Sweden's Controversial 'Informer Law' Sparks Debate

Published: 2024-11-26

The Swedish government has unveiled a contentious proposal aimed at increasing the return of individuals residing illegally in the country.

The proposal, often referred to as the 'informer law,' mandates six government agencies, including the Tax Agency and the Employment Service, to report undocumented individuals to authorities.

However, critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and social services are exempt from this obligation.

Critics argue that the law could undermine trust in public services and deter individuals from seeking necessary help.

The proposal has faced significant opposition from human rights organizations and labor unions, who fear it could lead to a society of informants.

Despite the controversy, the government plans to proceed with the legislative process, with a final proposal expected to be presented to parliament during the current term.
