Sweden's Ambitious Nuclear Power Expansion Questioned

Published: 2024-01-11

Sweden is moving towards more nuclear power.

The government plans to add 2,500 megawatts of electric power from new nuclear energy to the Swedish power system by 2035, equivalent to two large-scale reactors.

However, leading European nuclear experts question the feasibility of this ambitious plan due to the short timeline.

Industry directors and representatives from the Wallenberg sphere are calling for clearer political directives regarding nuclear power.

They believe progress is not fast enough and are willing to make long-term commitments to buy nuclear power and discuss co-financing.

Energy and Business Minister Ebba Busch announced Carl Berglöf as Sweden's new nuclear power coordinator.

His main focus will be paving the way for new nuclear power in Sweden, securing future energy supply.
