Sweden Updates Flood Risk Areas, Adding Five New Regions

Published: 2024-02-17

The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) has issued a comprehensive update on areas across Sweden facing significant flood risks, revealing that 26 locations are now under heightened scrutiny.

This latest assessment, part of Sweden's efforts to comply with the EU's Flood Directive, which mandates reviews every six years, has added five new regions to the watchlist, including Eskilstuna, Gävle, Sundsvall, Varberg, and Västerås.

These areas join others that are particularly vulnerable to flooding from various sources such as sea level rise, river overflows, and intense rainfall.

Notably, the review has expanded its scope to include risks from heavy rainfall, acknowledging the evolving nature of flood threats amidst climate change.

Over half a million residents live within these identified zones, underscoring the significant impact potential floods could have on both lives and critical infrastructure.

The removal of four areas from the previous list signals an ongoing reevaluation of flood risks as new data becomes available.

MSB's findings stress the importance of proactive flood risk management to mitigate existing dangers and adapt to future challenges posed by a changing climate.
