Sweden to Tighten Deportation Laws for Criminals

Published: 2024-05-02

The Swedish government, led by Migration Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard, has initiated an investigation aimed at tightening the laws surrounding deportation for crimes.

This move comes in response to concerns that the number of deportations, compared to the number of foreigners convicted of crimes, has been remarkably low.

The investigation will explore the entire legal framework for deportation due to criminal activity, with the goal of facilitating more deportations by potentially lowering the threshold for what constitutes a deportable offense and reducing consideration of a foreign national's ties to Sweden.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that deportations, including those following denied asylum applications, are carried out more effectively, despite the challenges of executing these orders due to some countries' reluctance to repatriate their citizens.
