Sweden to Overhaul Juvenile Care System

Published: 2024-02-06

Sweden is set to close down its controversial juvenile care homes known as Sis-hemmen, as announced by Social Services Minister Camilla Waltersson Gr"onvall and representatives of the coalition parties.

The decision comes in response to longstanding issues at the facilities, including reports of internal planning for violent escapes by gang-affiliated youth and testimonies of abuse against young girls.

The institutions, criticized for their broad mandate ranging from gang members to self-harming adolescents, are to be replaced by a yet unspecified alternative.

Prosecutor Lise Tamm has been appointed to lead an inquiry into the care homes' failure and to recommend measures to improve the legal security of the youth involved.

The move reflects a shift in the approach to juvenile care, with a focus on reforming the system based on discussions with child rights organizations and experts.

Minister Waltersson Gr"onvall, a political understudy with a background in education, has demonstrated political maturity by refraining from blaming the opposition and instead acknowledging the failures of past governments.
