The Swedish wolf population could be more than halved to 170 wolves, according to a new report by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket).
However, this reduction could present legal and biological risks.
The government aims to lower the population from its current count of 375 to between 170 and 270 wolves.
Measures such as relocating immigrant wolves with new genes are proposed to sustain the population.
The EU's acceptance of this reduction is uncertain, given the current reference value is 300 wolves.
