The Swedish government is taking steps to make the country a more attractive destination for foreign doctoral students and researchers, while also cracking down on misuse of study visas.

A special investigator has been tasked to review the regulations and report back by December 9. The initiative aims to foster a more efficient and predictable system for granting study permits, ensuring they are awarded to genuine students and not exploited for other purposes.

This comes amid concerns over the misuse of study permits by individuals seeking to enter Sweden for work under the guise of studying, highlighted by a report showing a significant number of students abandoning their studies prematurely.
