The Swedish government is grappling with how to tighten citizenship requirements amid rising security concerns.
Migrationsminister Johan Forssell has acknowledged the need for stricter criteria but admits the exact measures are still under consideration.
The government, alongside the Sweden Democrats, aims to implement tougher citizenship laws by 2026. Until then, they seek to slow down the granting of new citizenships, though the method remains unclear.
Recent data shows a significant increase in citizenship applications denied on security grounds, with 756 cases last year compared to 490 in 2022. The government is exploring additional security checks as a potential interim solution.
