The Swedish government and the Sweden Democrats have proposed stricter asylum rules to address issues in the current system.
Under the new plan, individuals whose asylum applications are denied must leave the country before reapplying, with the waiting period extended from four to five years.
Additionally, the option to switch from an asylum application to a work permit will be removed, aiming to reduce misuse of the system.
Those who fail to leave Sweden after a rejection may face a five-year reentry ban to the Schengen area.
Migration Minister Johan Forssell emphasized that these measures aim to ensure compliance and discourage illegal stays.
The proposed changes are set to take effect in April 2025.
