Sweden Stands Firm Against Russia in New NATO Context

Published: 2024-03-20

In a significant shift in foreign policy, the Swedish government, led by Foreign Minister Tobias Billström, has issued a stern warning against Russia's confrontational stance towards the European Union and NATO.

In light of Sweden's recent NATO membership, the government's new foreign declaration underscores the deterioration of the security situation in Europe due to Russia's aggressive actions, including the lowering of its threshold for using massive military force.

Billström emphasized the necessity of a unified, long-term strategy to counter Russia's ambitions of power expansion and potential harm.

Additionally, Sweden pledges to maintain a defensive posture, ready to defend its country, democracy, and values, possibly with military force if required.

The declaration also reiterates Sweden's commitment to non-proliferation, opting not to host nuclear weapons or permanent bases on its territory in peacetime.
