Sweden Resumes Aid to UNRWA Amid Reforms

Published: 2024-03-09

Sweden has announced the resumption of its financial aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), following a pause due to allegations of staff involvement in terror attacks in Israel.

The decision comes after the Swedish government received written assurances from UNRWA, promising transparency and strengthened internal controls to safeguard Swedish funds.

An initial sum of 200 million kronor out of the allocated 400 million for 2024 will be disbursed, with further payments contingent on UNRWA's progress in implementing promised reforms.

This move aligns with similar actions by Canada, highlighting international efforts to address humanitarian needs while ensuring accountability and neutrality within UNRWA, which aids millions of Palestinian refugees.
