Sweden Reflects on 2004 Tsunami

Published: 2024-12-23

As the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami approaches, Sweden reflects on one of the most devastating natural disasters in modern history.

Triggered by a massive earthquake near Sumatra, the tsunami claimed nearly 230,000 lives, including 543 Swedes, many of whom were holidaying in Thailand.

Around 20,000 Swedish tourists were in the affected region at the time.

The tragedy exposed gaps in Sweden's crisis preparedness, sparking years of scrutiny.

Efforts to honor the victims include plans for a memorial in Stockholm, ensuring the catastrophe remains a poignant reminder of the need for global solidarity and readiness.
