Sweden Makes Historic Debut at NATO Summit in Washington

Published: 2024-07-09

The NATO summit in Washington has begun, marking Sweden's first participation as an official member of the 75-year-old alliance.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, along with Foreign Minister Tobias Billström and Defense Minister Pål Jonson, have arrived to represent their country.

The three-day meeting will focus on support packages for Ukraine and new defense collaborations.

It has been confirmed that Sweden will be part of NATO's military command in the United States, although the exact boundary of this command near Sweden's east coast is still under discussion.

The summit is expected to showcase unity among allies, with U.

S. President Joe Biden hosting the event.

However, the absence of discussions on Ukraine's potential NATO membership has already disappointed some.
