Sweden Lowers Free Dental Care Age

Published: 2024-11-29

Sweden's Parliament has approved a significant dental care reform, reducing the age for free dental care from 23 to 19 years, effective from the start of the new year.

This decision is expected to save 450 million SEK annually.

The reform aims to redirect resources towards reducing dental costs for older adults with poor oral health and enhancing the high-cost protection for those aged 67 and above.

While some, like Josefine Maqtari, express concern that young people, especially students, may avoid dental visits due to cost, others see it as a necessary shift in focus.

The reform also introduces a state dental support for those aged 20 and above, offering financial assistance for dental expenses.

Regional authorities are implementing transitional rules to ensure ongoing treatments remain free for those under 23, with some regions offering more generous provisions.
