Sweden Faces Extreme Weather as New Year Begins

Published: 2024-01-02

Sweden has been hit with severe weather conditions as it welcomes the new year.

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued warnings for heavy snow and winds in the north, while southern regions are at risk of additional flooding.

Difficulties in mobility are expected, particularly in mountain areas where extreme winds and snow can pose risks such as frostbite.

The severe weather has disrupted traffic, with a truck reported skidded off the road due to ice.

Public transport is also affected with some bus services suspended.

Temperatures are predicted to drop drastically in the coming days, reaching as low as -40 degrees in northern Sweden.
