Swedish households are being urged to improve their waste sorting practices, as a significant portion of regular trash consists of food waste that could be transformed into biogas and biofertilizer.

According to reports, households contribute to approximately half of the food waste, which is crucial for Sweden to address in order to avoid potential fines from the EU for not meeting 2025 recycling targets.

The challenge is not unique to Sweden, with 18 out of 27 EU member states also at risk of failing to meet these goals.

Efforts to promote better waste management and recycling are ongoing, as authorities emphasize the importance of reducing waste and enhancing resource recovery in a circular economy.

The greatest volumes of waste poured down the drain include coffee, tea, and dairy products, highlighting the potential for improvement in food waste handling.
