Sweden Faces Elevated National Security Risks, Must Report Reveals

Published: 2024-02-19

Sweden's national security risks have escalated, according to the latest annual report from the Military Intelligence and Security Service (Must), presented today.

Highlighting a series of parallel crises negatively influencing the global security landscape, Must specifically points to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, the Sahel region in Africa, and notably, Russia's continued aggressive actions against Ukraine.

The report forecasts that the war in Ukraine will persist throughout the year, with a possible escalation on the horizon.

Must's assessment underscores Russia's capability to launch a military attack against Sweden as the primary threat, warning against underestimating the Russian military threat due to its current engagement in Ukraine.

General Lieutenant Thomas Nilsson, head of Must, emphasized the heightened risk-taking and ruthlessness of the Russian leadership, aiming to rebuild its military strength post-Ukraine losses despite economic challenges and sanctions.

Moreover, the threat of terrorism has intensified, with Sweden transitioning from a 'legitimate' to a 'designated' target for violent Islamist groups.

Alongside, the report warns of significant threats from foreign intelligence activities aimed at disrupting vital Swedish systems and influencing decision-making, highlighting Russia, China, and Iran as major concerns.

Amidst these challenges, Nilsson calls for vigilance, cautioning that the high tension level increases the risk of military incidents due to misunderstandings, underscoring the severity of the current security situation.
