Starting November 1, Sweden will eliminate the tax on plastic bags, a measure initially introduced in 2020 to meet EU environmental goals.
The tax had successfully reduced the average consumption of plastic bags from 83 per person in 2017 to just 17 in 2023. With the tax removal, major retailers like Coop, Hemköp, and Willys plan to lower bag prices, reflecting the tax cut.
Coop will reduce prices from 6.95 to 3.95 kronor, while Hemköp and Willys will make similar adjustments.
Despite the price drop, many believe that Swedes will continue their environmentally friendly habits, such as reusing bags.
A recent survey shows mixed feelings among Swedes about the tax removal, with 39% in favor and 38% against.
