The Swedish government is contemplating the classification of kratom, a plant with opioid-like effects, as a narcotic.
Social Minister Jakob Forssmed has indicated readiness to act if the Public Health Agency provides the necessary groundwork.
Kratom, native to Southeast Asia, has seen a surge in Swedish imports, rising from 7.2 tons in 2020 to 41 tons in 2023. Despite its legal status, concerns grow as young people increasingly use it for its euphoric and pain-relieving effects.
While some view it as a safer alternative to other drugs, experts warn of its addictive potential and overdose risks.
The debate continues as authorities consider future regulatory measures.
