Sweden Boosts Civil Defense Funding

Published: 2024-09-12

The Swedish government has announced a significant increase in funding for civil defense, marking the largest investment since the Cold War.

Starting in 2028, the annual budget for civil defense will rise to 15 billion kronor, doubling the current allocation.

This move aims to prepare Sweden for the initial impacts of a potential armed attack, focusing on key areas such as healthcare, telecommunications, food and water supply, transportation, and energy.

Despite this increase, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) suggests that 20 billion kronor is necessary to sustain long-term defense capabilities.

The government emphasizes the importance of these preparations in light of the current global security climate, ensuring that Sweden can effectively respond to crises and potential threats.
