Sweden has identified nearly 90,000 areas contaminated with environmental toxins, many of which may also be polluted by the persistent chemical PFAS, according to an updated list from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.
Industries such as firefighting efforts, ski resorts, and car dismantling operations have been highlighted as potential sources of PFAS contamination.
The presence of PFAS in numerous sectors and products suggests thousands of unknown PFAS-contaminated sites across the country.
This contamination poses significant health and environmental risks, including water sources.
Furthermore, the costs of purifying drinking water from PFAS are expected to rise sharply with stricter regulations coming into effect in 2026.
