Sweden at Crossroads in EU Climate Talks

Published: 2024-03-25

As EU climate ministers prepare to negotiate 2040 emission goals next week, the spotlight turns to Sweden's stance, influenced by its coalition government dynamics.

The Social Democrats accuse Climate Minister Romina Pourmokhtari of being influenced by the right-wing Sweden Democrats, urging the Liberals, to whom Pourmokhtari belongs, to adopt a more ambitious environmental position.

Sweden aims for a 95% reduction in emissions by 2040, a goal supported by both the Social Democrats and the Liberals, potentially positioning Sweden as a leader in EU climate negotiations.

The European Commission proposes a 90% reduction, making Sweden's stance critically important in the upcoming discussions.

Opposition parties stress the importance of not compromising political content for governmental power, highlighting the need for a clear, ambitious Swedish stand on climate objectives.
