Storm Ingunn Hits Sweden, Threatens Records

Published: 2024-02-01

The powerful storm Ingunn has unleashed severe weather across Sweden, bringing with it the potential to set new wind speed records.

Originating from Norway, where it was described as the worst storm in 30 years, Ingunn has now reached the Swedish mountains with gusts reported up to 51.8 meters per second, a figure that surpasses the previous record set in January 2017. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued multiple orange and yellow warnings for strong winds, often combined with snowfall, which pose significant risks of fallen trees, delayed or canceled transport, and power outages.

In anticipation of the storm's impact, particularly in the northern regions, Swedish electricity companies are preparing for power outages, while local authorities advise residents to stay indoors and follow guidelines.

Schools in the mountainous regions have recommended home-based learning, and ski resorts like 00e5re have taken precautions by securing loose objects and preparing for possible lift closures.

As Ingunn continues to move across the country, its full impact is still unfolding, with the storm expected to peak on Thursday evening and subside by Friday.
