Södertälje Faces Surge in Violence

Published: 2024-07-23

Södertälje has recently experienced a surge in violence, including two shootings and a bombing, following the lifting of a security zone.

The latest incident occurred on Monday night when a hand grenade was thrown into a grocery store in the Geneta district, injuring a woman.

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the bombing, while police are investigating potential links to ongoing gang conflicts in the area.

Local police chief Caroline Aspegren stated that the violence is complex and cannot be solely addressed by reintroducing security zones.

The police had previously implemented a security zone that allowed them to conduct searches without specific suspicions, but its effectiveness is still under evaluation.

The violent conflict in Södertälje has been ongoing since late 2022, involving rival criminal groups.
